The book Now Discover Your Strengths (authored by Marcus Buckingham and Donald O. Clifton) was released in 2001 and Strengths Finder 2.0 is it 2007 follow-up. Both of these books are useful guides for anyone making a decision about their career path.
The idea behind both books is that each one of us possesses distinct strengths. By identifying these strengths and putting them to work in our careers, not only will we be more successful and productive, we’ll enjoy our work more.
It’s a simple idea that’s become lost in the quest to improve on our weaknesses. Yet our strengths are the things that we do naturally and even effortlessly. Sometimes so effortlessly that we’re surprised that others don’t find these tasks as easy and enjoyable as we do.
Inside each book you’ll find a code that allows you to take the online Strengths Finder test. (It’s for on-time only use, so if you want to take the test you have to purchase the book). The test will indicate your top five strengths from a list of 34 strengths that the authors have identified through two million interviews conducted over three decade with the Gallup Organization.
The 34 strengths cover loose categories with names such as “Activator,” “Developer,” and “Learner.” And each describes passions and attitude more than specific skills. For example, Activators, “believe that action is the best device for learning.”
Once you have identified your strengths, the next step is so simple that it’s usually overlooked – figure out how to use your strengths at work and build on them rather than getting stuck in a job in which you’re constantly asked to perform duties that don’t come naturally. In other words–find out what you’re good at and tailor your work to your strengths. These books and the accompanying test will help you sort through these option and decide how to find a career – or transform the one you already have into one – that uses your best qualities.
